If you aren’t yet aware of its meaning, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Simple enough, but just what is SEO and what is it for? This is a more complex matter.

Search engine optimization refers to a number of different techniques used for building websites and the content on these sites to improve their placident in the search engine results pages.

The idea of SEO is to make your website more visible to web users who search for content with search engines (which is essentially everyone who uses the World Wide Web at all).

If your website is a personal page meant primarily for yourself and perhaps a small number of family members and friends, it may not be all that important to you to have a site which is optimized.

However, if your website is business oriented, it matters a great deal.

Why SEO Matters

 
Think of it this way: if your business decided to stop being listed in the phone book, took the signs and awnings down and stopped advertising, how successful would you be at attracting new business?

Search engines have for many largely replaced the function once performed by local phone directories. That’s why SEO matters!

In order to attract (and even retain) business, you need to have a high profile where your customers are likely to see you – and these days, this place is online.

It once was that if people couldn’t find you in the phone book, your business was in serious trouble. Now, of course the question is how easy it is for people to find your website.

You may have a great looking website and even use the URL in your printed marketing materials and advertising campaigns; but not everyone is going to see your advertisident in the paper.

People tend to look at web sites when they’re actually in need of something and even if a potential customer has seen your ads, it’s not at all certain they’ll remember to go to your site immediately when they’re looking for what you offer.

Instead, your potential customers are using search engines – which is why your business may need some help from a professional SEO consultant to ensure that consumers will find you when they really are looking for you. That’s why SEO matters!

One of the things we should look at first here is what the search engines actually see when their crawlers come to your site.

The search engines don’t know (or care) about your site’s design in terms of graphics (though they will read the alternate text for these images – if you don’t know about this important elident of web design, an SEO consultant can help you with this).

All the search engines see when they look at your site is text and nothing but text. For this reason, sites which are entirely Flash-based are not generally recommended from an SEO perspective (many visitors don’t like this either).

What the search engine crawlers are looking at on your site is the actual text contained on your website as well as the information contained in what is known as the headers of your site’s HTML, most notably your title tags.

These tell the search engine crawlers what your site is about – if you don’t include these (or use an entirely graphics or animation based site), the search engines really can’t tell what your site is supposed to be about.

This can be fatal to your site, as it basically assures that no one will be able to find you with a search engine query.

As for how the search engines determine page ranking, this is a much more complex question. The short answer is relevance: but the relevance of any given website is calculated in a number of ways.

The exact nature of the algorithms used by each search engine is different and each is closely guarded proprietary information – to further complicate matters, these algorithms are constantly evolving.

However, there are certain things which the SEO experts have managed to figure out through analysis and reverse engineering of search results and websites which are universally applicable.

This is what enables an SEO consultant to look over a website and suggest changes to the site to increase its visibility in terms of the search engines.

The alterations which can improve a site’s search engine rankings include fine tuning the copy on the site to make it tune with the site’s content, its meta tags or especially popular search terms which are relevant to the content.

There are other changes which will improve a site’s search engine ranking which are not visible to visitors to the site.

These are changes which affect what the search engine crawlers see when they visit the site and help this to more accurately determine what the site is about. There are yet other SEO techniques which your site should avoid using.

Have you noticed that you are only seeing updates in your newsfeed from the same people lately? Have you also noticed that when you post things like status messages, photos and links, the same circle of people are commenting and you are not hearing from anyone else?

…The problem is that a large chunk of your contact list can’t see anything you post and here’s why:

The “New Facebook” has a newsfeed setting that by default is automatically set to show ONLY posts from people you’ve recently interacted with or have interacted the most with (which would be limited to the couple of weeks just before people started switching to the “new profile”). So, in other words, for both business and personal pages, unless you or your friends/fans commented on one anothers posts within those couple of weeks – you are now invisible to them and they are invisible to you!!

HERE’S THE FIX:
On your homepage click the “Most Recent” title on the right of the Newsfeed, then click on the drop down arrow beside it and select “Edit Options”. Click on “Show Posts From” and change the setting to “All Of Your Friends and Pages” (you can also access the “Edit Options” link at the very bottom of the Facebook homepage on the right)

Note: Business pages do not have a newsfeed. Owners of business pages should adjust the settings on their personal accounts.

The good news is:
You can now view all of your friends and fans again.

The bad news is:
YOU ARE STILL INVISIBLE to a large portion of your list. If you want to re-establish contact, you will need to get the word out to ALL of your contacts by inviting them to this “event” or creating one of your own so they can read the post and adjust their settings.

To invite your friends:
Click on “Attending” at the top and then you will see an option to invite your friends under the smiley face. It’s public so everyone who logs onto Facebook can view it and even the friends who can’t see your posts WILL see the event invitation. You can also tweet about it, create a blog post or send out an email to your subscribers in hopes of reaching them all.

Greetings from Mark Hoverson,

***Please note, I’m writing this at 11:48am Sunday night, and time-releasing it around 7am Monday morning.

So this weekend I lost about $13K.

Here’s why:

This afternoon a friend was over for supper (Tbones, asparagus, baked baby potatoes, and ice cold Coke from the glass bottle…the kind with real cane sugar instead of the high fructose goo because it tastes way better that way).

Anyway, before we ate, we had our oldest Isaac (7 yrs), read a passage from the Bible and then I quizzed my kids on what was written (we definitely don’t do that every night, but I like using the Bible as our dinner table appetizer because of the variety of stories, poems, songs, and critical-thinking ethical issues it poses for the kids. It’s a basic bonanza of fodder for stimulating conversation).

Moving on…

After supper, my buddy watches Shanny & I as we train our little kids how to completely clear the messy dinner table (cleaning plates, wiping table, cleaning floors, putting away salts/peppers/sauces/etc).

Then suddenly, my buddy gets this reflective, philosophical look in his eye and says…

“You know Mark… I teach a 7th grade Sunday school class of about 8 kids and today every single one of them said they have been diagnosed with ADHD, ADD, and other stuff…and I think all of them are on meds for it.”

So, let’s snap back to me losing $13K this weekend…and why I really don’t care.

I was asked to speak at a really cool internet conference this weekend. And I was truly honored at the invitation. Speaking would have yielded me at least $13ish thousand (estimated based on what usually happens if I speak), and some new teammates and join venture partners, and some friends/connections/more exposure/blah blah blah…

But, why did I politely decline the invite?
And thus forgo all benefits involved?

Very simple:

#1- I only like to travel if I am going to see my teammates. Or going on a flat-out vacation.

#2- My high school buddies & I also played in a basketball tourny this weekend and hanging out in a pub with them after a game is literally priceless.

#3- I have been able to grow my business to a point where $13K isn’t enough to motivate me to spend a weekend away from my wife and kids.

Okay, so back to my friend’s comment on the drugged up kids in his Sunday school. (ps–if you have kids with those issues, what I’m about to write isn’t meant to be a guilt trip so no worries.

Anyway, one of my all-time favorite direct response marketers is Dan Kennedy. He is a genius. I love his writing and his thoughts dearly. If I ever meet him, I will hug him.

But, one of his books I’m reading right now talks about his schedule and commitment to working. He mentions a couple divorces he’s had, and how he looks forward to one day knowing “leisurely mornings” and whatever (he’s probably close to 60yrs & is the most transparent honest writer I’ve ever read by the way).

I was reading through his confessions about the toll business has put on him and I said to myself, “Forget that.”

Thus, here is some of my new developing manifesto:

#1- My kids are not going to be drugged up because they were stuck infront of a TV because Dad was out there working like an idiot and Mom was so busy cleaning the house she didn’t have time for them. They will have order, vision, and intimacy with human beings…they will be stretched, active, and challenged to live purposefully.

#2- I am not going to let this recession pass me by without acquiring massive riches through the amazingly cheap infustructure & distribution of an online business.

#3- I am not going to play small in this recession because that’s what everyone else is doing. And I learned early in life that the “majority” of people are a very bad demographic to follow.

#4- I am re-reading “The 4 Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferris over and over and over again because that book has allowed me to radically sky my income & my time-off “at the same time.”

#5- Unlike my dear mentor Dan Kennedy, I am not going to wait until some boring retirement at age 65 to have a “leisurely morning” so I can reflect on a life that I wish I would have pursued if I just had some guts & wisdom when I was younger. Speaking of leisurely mornings, here’s a 27-second video my wife grabbed of my Gracie & I catching leaves outside this Fall (the epitome of my perfect morning).

#6- It dawned on me that my business is to fuel my passions. And thus, my passions are to fuel my business. Bottomline: through the mobility of the web & the ever-growing necessity of transparent branding, I am going to use my business to “fund” my heart’s desires (like I’m doing an IronMan in Hawaii this June). But, the beautiful thing is:I am using the IronMan as a rally point for creating a team of adventurepreneurs who are committed to travel, wealth, health and time freedom, and personal mastery. Thus, my business & my passions are intertwined at such a level that I feel almost the same whether I’m working or playing. I admit this is a rare blessing uniquely available to the new breed of adventurepreneurs (and yes I will get my book cranked out on exactly what an adventurepreneur is someday soon).
