I’ve been interviewed twice in the last week for articles in trade magazines – one for restaurants and the other for optical professionals in Canada – about using online marketing and social media for locally based businesses (bricks and mortar stores).

I tell them if their ideal client/customer/diner/patient cannot find them on the web, it’s like they don’t exist. If you’re like me, and millions are, you use the Web to find information for just about everything, including local businesses. How many times have you done a search to find a restaurant in your own neighborhood or one you’re visiting? Or how about to find a chiropractor or dentist or optician or spa or…?

You’ve got to have a robust online presence in order to compete and be found by your ideal client.

And the best place to start?

You guessed it! A blog for your business, of course!

When you create keyword-rich content on a blog, it gets indexed by the search engines and you can be found by your customers when they do an online search for the problem(s) they have and you solve. The new FTC guidelines regarding endorsements and testimonials and how they affect bloggers and marketers has been a brewing story since late Summer 09′. Frankly, after doing an interview on the subject in August my “BS antenna” have been up at attention awaiting the Marketplace Molesters to use this to drain money out of your pockets with promises of protection.

With the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) new guidelines going into effect on December 1, 2009, scam artists, Internet marketers and even some attorneys are trying to sell bloggers, affiliate marketers and website owners like you products and services that could actually get you into MORE trouble with the FTC.

Dear Partner, I wanted to share a “sneak preview” with you of something that I am very excited about that will be launched soon called Daily Lights. A few months ago, I started writing brief inspirational thoughts and encouragements that came out of my morning prayer time with Him. I began sending these to my family and team and some close friends. I got such a great response from them and Jane came to me and said that I should compile them all together and share them with you, my fellow warriors. I thought that was a great idea and so we have begun to put this together for you. We will have written Daily Lights, as well as audio and video versions available for you, which will all be launching in conjunction with our online Den membership (coming soon!). I find that I write with more freedom and liberty knowing I’m writing to an audience that is searching for more than just the same ol’, same ol’, and people who are ready for the next level of revelation. They are witty, transparent, happy, somber, stimulating and inspiring pieces and I hope you enjoy them as much as I’ve enjoyed putting them together.

Day 1

1 Corinthians 1:19: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are BEING SAVED it is the POWER of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

First of all, the message of the Cross is an ongoing work in our souls. Notice the verse in Corinthians says, “to us who are being saved.” It doesn’t say we are saved but being saved. I believe that salvation is a process of ongoing purging and cleansing. Yes, we who believe and follow Christ are going to spend eternity in His City, but while we’re on this Earth we are being constantly purified by the work and the message of the Cross. That’s why we have to hear it often.

A mutual antagonism exists between the wisdom of this world and the wisdom of God and the conflict shows up supremely in the Cross of Christ. God works most wisely and most powerfully in ways directly opposite to human expectations. Even as Jesus hung on the Cross, the Jews asked for a power-sign. The Greeks made the pursuit of wisdom a meaningless end in itself, as Paul learned at Athens (Acts 17:21). Today I am finding the same thing with the Jews in the Church—the believers—constantly wanting a sign. Ministers are forced into performing wonders and miracles (not always authentic) in order to fulfill the expectations of these people. Jesus refused to show a sign to anyone on the Cross. He could’ve called legions of angels but He refused to do that. Why don’t we learn from our Master? No sign will ever appease or convince anyone of the glory of God’s Son. The Holy Spirit draws men to God. We are mere vocal cords, instruments, scalpels in the Surgeon’s hands. It is a known fact that the Jews requested a sign and the Greeks sought after wisdom. We have those two genres in the Church today and so many fall into a trap, especially those in leadership—to display some supernatural sign in order to convince one group or to teach “unsearchable” and unreachable doctrines to prove their wisdom to convince the other group.

The message of Christ is simple, powerful, pure, authentic and radical.

The deep gap between human and divine ways is evidenced through human history. The “power of God” is displayed in the Gospel (GOOD NEWS). The Gospel is the revelation of truth, but in the final analysis, it is the operation of God’s power with victory over sin and death. Biblical salvation is nothing short of a complete restoration of the universe with a new Heaven and a new Earth. The heart of true wisdom is knowing the ways and the will of God, and living in harmony with ultimate, created reality. The “human wisdom” that Paul opposes is not intellect or education, but a false independence of God, bent toward self-sufficiency. God rejects human wisdom because of its pride and self-glory. The professedly learned are forever trying to bring to nothing the faith of the humble believer, but they fail in their attempts. Their arguments break down, their theories fall under their own weight, and their plots discover themselves before their purpose is accomplished.

THE OLD GOSPEL IS NOT EXTINCT YET, NOR WILL IT BE WHILE THE LORD LIVES. IF IT COULD HAVE BEEN EXTERMINATED, IT WOULD HAVE PERISHED FROM OFF THE EARTH LONG AGO.

Day 2

Lighten up.

Early this morning I woke up hearing the breeze. I am far too familiar with this sound to ignore it and even though I would’ve preferred to continue in my slumber, I arose. It was still dark outside. The breeze, as I call it, is the voice of God. Genesis 3:8 says “…the voice of the Lord God was ‘walking’ in the garden in the ‘cool’ of the day.” The cool of the day is translated in this verse as breeze, wind, spirit, and impulse and tends to suggest mischievousness. Yes indeed!! You mean God can be mischievous? I do. I’ve spent too many years with Him in various places and in strange situations not to recognize this one amazing attribute in Him—something most people would not as much as consider to be within His makeup. The translation for “cool” in the Hebrew is also, unaccountable impulse. Now think about being mischievous for a minute. It comes upon you suddenly and very seldom is it pre-meditated. There are a few definitions for mischief but the one associated with my perception today is “showing fondness by causing trouble in a playful way.” Our trouble is we are too afraid to laugh. Voltaire once wrote, “God is a comedian playing to an audience too afraid to laugh.” Well, I’m not. God writes a lot of comedy…the trouble is, He’s stuck with so many bad actors that don’t know how to play funny!

Nevertheless, this morning was a little different. I was not very happy about things in my ministry, etc. and I thought God would play along with me. Come to find out, He was not in that mood and had made up His mind to jerk me out of my sullenness. I decided to take my bicycle and ride around the neighborhood and pray for every house that I passed. After completing this, I discovered that I was a little out of breath and complained about my age to God. “Aging just doesn’t make sense,” I told Him, “so why did you make it this way?” No answers. Suddenly, as I was standing with my bike next to me, the Earth shook vigorously for about three seconds. Thinking it was an earthquake in the making, I looked for a place to run – nowhere. It then dawned on me that I was complaining to the God of the Universe, and a portion of His Earth just shook under my feet and all I could see in my mind’s eye was Him smiling. Ridiculous?

Well, I choose to believe that He was sending me a little message. A few lights went on in the houses around me and all I could do was smile. “What You do to get a little attention, God!” Believe it or not, I actually heard these words, “What are you complaining about? I’m so old that my blood type has been cancelled.”

Lighten up today.

After my unexpected experience with God, I realized that everything—everything—is in HIS HANDS. You can run nowhere. So enjoy the ride.

I hope that these little messages encourage and uplift you. I am excited about releasing them soon. On another note, it’s that wonderful time of year again where we have the opportunity and privilege to be thankful for the things we value most in our lives. As citizens of America now, Jane and I have come to love and appreciate the patriotic spirit displayed during the American holidays. Thanksgiving is a beautiful occasion for our families to reunite and our hearts to be turned back to the days our forefathers established this beautiful Nation and everything it stands for. It’s as simple as this—they knew enough to dedicate an entire day to honor God and give Him thanks. We should learn from them. I pray that this Country would return to that place. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Now is your time, America! Enjoy your family, friends, loved ones, pumpkin pies and all the other delightful things that encompass the joy of this Thanksgiving holiday.

Kim and I spent most of the 80′s traveling with our little family throughout South Africa, the USA, Europe, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and many other countries. Kim was outrageous when it came to giving, and when I first experienced his radical generosity, I was in shock. He would give his last few cents when there was nothing in the bank, and I would observe how completely at ease he was. He was almost mischievous about the whole thing. I, on the other hand, had to subdue my own feelings. I have always been more conservative, but I soon learned to trust him. There was never a feeling of panic when it came to money because of this radical faith he had in God. He had given up a musical career that would have made him millions of dollars, to follow God. God had saved him from death and Kim believed that because of this, God would always make a way for us. As a result, he has always given financially and of himself.

It wasn’t easy to go along with this, being a wife and now a mother; but I would always watch with amazement when, at the midnight hour, money would come in. In the late 90′s, we slowly started seeing the rewards of our 20 years of labor. It seemed that we had reached a place where “struggle” would be a thing of the past.

I knew well, through experience, that a prophet is always presented with unusual challenges, and that confrontation is their bedfellow. So I was not completely surprised when at this peaceful stage of our ministry, a call from the police brought about a brand new struggle.

We were living in a small town in Texas when my 13-year-old son became the target of an accusation made by petty neighbors who were friendly with the police officer who patrolled our neighborhood. Our son had played with fire in the backyard with some friends, and the town police wanted a story. We suddenly found ourselves on the top of the news hour for a week. My 13-year-old boy was thrown into jail, put before a judge, and eventually released after being accused of trying to make a bomb to blow up the school!!!! Not only had he been falsely accused, but the police informed the news media that they had found cocaine in our house.

This was broadcast on ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. and suddenly our quiet peaceful life was disrupted, and our privacy invaded by the media. News vans were parked outside our front door, but we refused to speak to anyone – God knew the truth and all I prayed for was vindication. It came. When the lab report came back 6 weeks later proving that the powder that had been found by the police was in fact aspirin, we were vindicated; and yet nothing was reported by the media. We were heartbroken, and for the first time in my life, I observed Kim breaking down. Letters were pouring in from all over accusing him of being a bad father, and this was so untrue. Kim has always been an encourager, breathing life into everyone, always giving them hope no matter what the circumstances, from prisoners to Presidents, and now I observed him regressing and becoming reclusive.

Kim is magnanimous in that he cannot hold a grudge and forgives very easily, forgetting immediately. I now saw him rapidly becoming bitter. We had been through so many things in our life, and never once had I seen him remain deflated for more than a day or so. Now the days turned into weeks. Kim called Jan Crouch from TBN and requested that they take his weekly TV show off the network; he cancelled all of his meetings for the rest of the year and removed himself from the public eye.

I realized that at this point there was nobody that could help him but God. God would use me once again to receive the Word from His heart, and take us to the next phase of the ministry. I had to make a sacrifice and sell our house, our home that we loved dearly and had built together for over 15 years.

I would have to show Kim the way to Hollywood, California – one of the places that we were destined to go to in order to infiltrate the entertainment industry. Kim and I both hated the thought of moving to California, but I recognized that this heartache was God’s way of telling us to pack our bags and start the next phase of our journey.

I concluded that God was preparing us for this great task. Once again, there was no income and we were penniless. Kim was not traveling or ministering, and our warriors were dwindling. Yet God would make a way as He had always done for us in a unique and beautiful way.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this month, I think of all the years that God provided for us. In times when we felt lost, God showed us the way; in times when we were accused and lied about, God gave us vindication. Through every step of the way, God has always walked with us, and for this I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I know that no matter the circumstance, God will always take care of us, and He will do the same for you.

CANDIED YAMS (THANKSGIVING TREAT)

4 pounds yams, peeled and cut to large bite-sized pieces
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 cup vanilla extract
2 tablespoons of orange zest
2 tablespoons flour
1 small bag of marshmallows
1 bag of pecans
2 cups of brown sugar
1 stick of butter
Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Boil yams until slightly underdone, to avoid breaking. Strain, cool and set aside.

In a large container whisk together cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, orange zest, and flour. Put cooled yams in a deep baking dish, add dry ingredients and stir.

Topping:
Finely grind pecans and add brown sugar and melted butter into a separate bowl. Sprinkle mixture over the top of the yams bake for 20 to 25 minutes. After baking, sprinkle marshmallows to the top and then bake in the oven for a further 5 minutes. Enjoy!

Twelve Great Reasons To Journal

Let’s talk first about why you should journal. What are the benefits for you? Unless you are convinced that journaling is going to make a big difference in your life, you are very likely to give up on this great habit before it’s firmly established.
